democrats. >> as acting commissioner i want to apologize on behalf of the internal revenue service for the mistakes we made and poor service we provided. the affected organizations and american public deserve better. i resigned because as the acting commissioner, what happens in the irs, whether i was personally involved or not stops at my desk. and so i should be held accountable for what happens. >> nothing bad is going to happen to you. you are going to get your full benefits and everything associated with your retirement as an irs employee. >> nothing bad is happening to me? congressman. >> financially. you are allowed to retire. that's the level of accountability in washington, d.c. now. you are still acting. you came here on the taxpayer dollar today. i are getting a paycheck for being here today, correct? correct? >> correct. >> thank you. >> people are losing confidence in our government and i hope that you feel the same sense it

treasury inspector general's report and i believe its conclusions are consistent with that i think that what happened here was that foolish mistakes were made by people trying to be more efficient in work load inspection. >> the inspector general report says that no one acted out of malice or political motivation. mr. george, i want to know, do you still stabbed by that? >> we have no evidence at this time to contradict that assertion, sir. >> if the targeting wasn't targeting, if the targeting wasn't based on philosophy, how come only conservatives got snagged? >> they didn't, sir. organizations from all walks and all persuasions were pulled in. >> did you have targeting lists that contained words like progressive or organizing in their names. >> we collected, to be blunt, more than tea party cases more gorge's own report. >> there were no progressive organize buzz

2012 subcommittee hearing looking into nonprofit groups seeking tax exempt status. this very issue in discrimination involved in that, ryan used the word mislead, chairman dave camp went a step further. >> despite a two year long investigation by this committee, the irs never told the american people or their representatives about this simple truth. in fact we were repeatedly told no such targeting was happening. that isn't being mislead. that's lying. >> carp noted that two years ago senior irs officials were aware of targeting the top management of the irs knew a year ago, harris. >> harris: we heard a lot of republican outrage. we saw preppive charlie rangel from new york among the democrats. but, more of them, what are they saying tonight? >> well, they are also irritated as well for a variety of reasons. one because they realized this could happen to liberal groups some other time. they are also irritated because the irs did not

consult with congress. here is a sample of democratic outrage. you said foolish mistakes were made. the president said it better he said handling of tax exempt applications in that process at the irs was outrageous and intolerable. no excuse. >> all of us are angry at this on behalf of the nation and we are determined to get answers to our questions about how this happened and ensure that it doesn't happen again. finally, throughout this time, the irs leadership has demonstrated a total disregard for the oversight role of the congress and this committee. stephan miller the inspector general and sholman will be up here tuesday testifying before the senate finance committee.

so this investigation is not anywhere close to ending. harris? >> harris: mike mike emanuel. thank you very much. and away from the hill now to a courtroom. o.j. simpson' exattorney ripping apart the former football star's testimony denying just about everything o.j. said on the stand two days ago. o.j. is doing nine years behind bars all because of a sting operation he organized in vegas back in 2007. he and some buddies confronted memorabilia gheerls a hotel room to get some stuff back he claimed was his. somebody brought some guns and that resulted in serious criminal charges as you may remember. o.j. blames former attorney general yale galanter for misland frp handling the case. he also said he told galanter about the plan before the attack. he denied that. he ripped o.j.'s claim that he did not know people were going to carry guns. >> based on my conversations with mr. simpson. on the day after the event, he had told me that he did,

in fact, ask alexander and mcclinton to bring the guns. he knew that he had screwed up. he knew there were guns in the room. >> harris: o.j. had to waive attorney-client testimony so galanter could testify. whether that decision would l. pay off remains to be seen. seeing o.j. simpson in court today brought back memories no doubt. alesion shah, his alicia his current attorney ripped into the testimony of the old one. >> that's right, yale galanter said of his defense of o.j. back in 2008 it was quote stellar. o.j.'s current attorney did everything he could during questioning to shut him down every turn of that 2008 trial. wanted to know where galanter spent o.j.'s defense money. why he didn't hire experts and why he allowed certain pieces of evidence in. the whole thing more stand off and debate than q and a. >> you can't pick and

associated press saying that a new york commuter railroad line has had two trains collide in connecticut. this is rush hour time. people are commuting back and forth. these trains are usually packed. a spokeswoman for metro europe says it happened within the last hour. one headed east grand central station in the heart of new york city when it derailed collided with a westbound train, injuries are reported. our jonathan hunt tracking developments inside the newsroom now. jonathan what do we know so far about the people hurt? we just got word from the fairfield political police department. they are telling us, harris, that there are 20 to 25 nonlife threatening injuries nobody as far as we know at the moment has been killed. 20 to 25 nonlife threatening injuries. let me read to you the statement we just got metro north who runs this line. about 6:10 p.m. the eastbound train, the 441 train out of new haven

through grand central at 6:32 p.m. derailed just east of the fairfield metro station. in so doing, it hit a westbound train on the adjacent track. some cars of that train, the 5:30 p.m. out of new haven due 7:18 also derailed. emergency personnel are arriving at this major derailment. preliminary reports of injuries. there there is no north metro service. trains on route are being stopped at the nearest station. they are calling this a major derailment. harris, 20 to 25 nonlife threatening injuries. let me tell you this as well. the one piece of good news here. the pictures i'm seeing from some of the local new york stations who already have choppers up over the scene show both trains actually still standing straight up. neither of them flipped over, it appears. that would obviously be good news. they appear to have more

sideswiped each other rather than a head on collision,. >> harris: hairs all right. i'm asking right now because you are mentioning that local crews are now up in the air. i'm asking when we might see pictures. we are standing by for. this i know you are working in the newsroom. come back as the news warrants. to give people what this is like on this time of day on a friday afternoon to have these commuter line trains lpful to get perspective on who rides them and just how packed they really are our trace gallagher who is on our west coast bureau who when he lived on the east coast used to take same train line home from this very office. tell us what we are talking about when we say packed with people. >> well, you are talking about the primary means of transportation from the new york area out to connecticut. when you talk about these trains on friday afternoon they are parked. -- packed. if you go through greenwich and stanford and norwalk moving up to fair kneeled you tend to drop off a fair number of passengers that would at least limit the

crowd size a little bit. we are not just talking about people who were sitting down in seats of threes but also people standing up on these trains that's how cruded they can be. these are the new trains that metro north just put into service. these things are moving sometimes upwards of 90, close to 100 miles per hour. you have got two trains going at that velocity. that can be a catastrophic collision as jonathan said early reports are more may be sideswiped than collided. the trains kind of look like they bent over. almost leaned over off the tracks but there are clearly some major signs of wreckage there. we are hearing reports of at least 8 or 9 ambulances on the scene coming from the various districts fairfield would be the closest town then you have west port and stanford. those are the major jurisdictions that would bring resources and first responders to the scene there. metro north is very good

this is a major commuter line. one train was headed into the city to grand central station. the others with headed out. this is in fairfield connecticut. that's southwest and part of the state of connecticut. we are going to get more details now from jonathan hunt. real quickly, jonathan. 20 to 25 people with nonlife threatening injuries. that's according to the metro north line. we are still waiting to hear directly from the authorities because as we have heard from trace a lot of ambulances. >> let me interrupt you. we actually have heard as i just reported from the fairfield quengt cut police department those injuries are 20 to 25 and nonlife threatening. that is directly from the police in connecticut. now, it appears that we had an eastbound and a westbound train. one was leaving westfield station it derailed and then clipped the westbound train. now, the fact that it had long left the station good

news. two trains not moving at their highest speeds. as trace gallagher was talking about both of the traipse appear to be upright. no cars as far as we can tell tipped over. that would lead obviously to more injuries in that had happened. what we know right now, 20 to 25 life threatening injuries. no fatalities reported. that directly from fairfield connecticut police department, harris. >> harris: all right, jonathan, stay on it we will come back to you in the newsroom as news warrants. let's go back to trace gallagher who has that perspective because he used to ride this very line from fox world headquarters in the middle of manhattan, trace? >> and i want to just expound on what jonathan was saying there about the speeds. remember the trains all have speed limits coming in and out of these different towns. he makes a very good point saying if this was just pulling out of fairfield, the trains, it takes them the better part of a mile

or two miles to get up to really any kind of high speed. so, if this had just pulled out of the thing and, this by the way, these are our first pictures we are seeing in this. it really does like jonathan was saying earlier look look like the trains sideswiped each other. one of them did derail which caused the collision in the first place. look there of the train on the left-hand side of the screen. you see the door open on the right-hand side? you can see that it looked like it kind of swiped the other side with the broken glass on the front here. that appears to be the area where the conductor would sit. the train operator would sit in that front little kook bickel on the left-hand side. the very front of the train there is a glass window on the left-hand side as well as the right-hand side. the conductor would sit on the left-hand side right there. so, the good news in that scenario would be that the trains didn't crumble at all and the injuries were primarily in those front cars and that's where you

oversight committee issued a subpoena to ambassador thomas pickerring. the co-chair of the state department's internal review or the accountability review board to appear on capitol hill next week for a deposition. the republican chairman of the oversight committee congressman darrell issa wrote, quote: your refusal to it allow state investigators to interview you is inconsistent with your commitment to be tough and transpaint. i hope you will consider. the senior democrat issuing his own statement, quote: today's subpoena is a stark example of extreme republican overreach and shameful politicization of this tragedy. republicans are also keying in on a significant gap between the attack on 9/11 and the first emails released by the white house this week on the talking points. the email trailer runs from september 14 through september 15th. one day before ambassador susan rice portrayed the attack as spontaneous and not terrorism. the how's merging the administration to be completely transparent and reveal all communications in

independently. and they have already scheduled hearings on capitol hill. carl cameron with the news now live in d.c. what are lawmakers planning to do to protect journalists anonymous sources? >> well, those hearings will be investigated to find out exactly what motivated this and whether it was legal. and then the question is what can they do to fix it? it's flick complicated. ever since 9/11 and the patriot act there is tension about protecting people's lives. free flow of information act designed to protect sources and reporter from intrutions by the bush administration. ultimately got defeated now being introduced by freshman republican who used to be a journalist and sees a major problem. >> then senator barack obama supported of it until he didn't support it in 2008. which has been the case of barack obama he get into the executive branch, into the shows and become less transparent. there is department of justice examples that

affiliate here in manhattan. these trains, one was coming toward grand central station. this is fairfield, connecticut. just outside the city. these trains bumped each other as you see. slid along the slide. called a major derailment. but the good news as you can tell from these pictures is that they're upright. don't know exactly how fast they were going but not likely that they were up to their max speed. sometimes they can go 85, 90 miles per hour that might account for the very good and encouraging news that there are no fatalities to report in this. 20 to 25 people injured. both metro north trains there and the fairfield connecticut police department confirming that those injuries among those people are nonlife threatening. this is affecting train service up and down those lines. in and out of the city. but for right now. those trains are upright. there is nothing excessive to report. no evacuations, nothing going on like that. it's a sole situation there in the middle of your screen. first pictures. they are treating the injureds we understand a dozen or so ambulances on

>> harris: breaking news. let's put that in the middle of the screen there. this is really the best vantage point we have had of this. fairfield, connecticut. breaks story we have been following this hour. two commuter trains that service the suburbs outside of new york city and connecticut collided about

90 minutes or so ago. 20 to 25 people injured. nonlife threatening injuries. no fatalities in this. they are still working at the scene. can you see one of those train cars has been ripped apart. we know that each train lost cars off that track. this is the best vantage point we have had now. associated press wires. word coming in exactly what they are looking for now or looking at. at this stage we are quoting now lt. with the connecticut police. we don't know if this was a mechanical failure, an accident or something deliberate. we want to ask jonathan hunt to come in now. jonathan, i know you are trying to talk with police. >> yeah, we were talking to police. they confirm those 20 to 25 nonlife threatening injuries. obviously this is a very early stage of the investigation. they will be keeping an open mind as to how this may have happened. we are also told the national transportation safety board is quote gathering information about this incident. what we know for now is

that there was an inbound train leaving fairfield station, westbound train coming towards that station. the eastbound train for whatever reason derailed. it appears as you look at those pictures quite clearly to have sideswiped the westbound train. that parts of that train then derailed. as i can imagine, if you were on that train, it would have been absolutely terrifying. nonlife threatening injuries as i say. clearly when you look at the dang of that one particular car as it zooms out there. the one particular car, people would certainly have been hurt if they were in that car. you can can imagine in a packed commuter train, harris people may have been standing, may have been walking. it would have been very easy to get those two dozen injuries. the good news tonight appears to be according to the fairfield connecticut police department there are no fatalities. 20 to 25 nonlife threatening injuries.

>> all right, jonathan. thank you so much for staying on it it go to trace gallagher who is on our west coast. used to be on the east coast. has taken this commuter line. my question for you, trace, now that we are looking at this. what is the situation would be for getting people out of that area. are their parking lots where they can stage so on and so forth to get people away from the scene. >> tracks are hot. you have to be very careful about approaching these things. they will try shut down the electricity as much as they can. in some of these areas there is no way to walk on and off the train that easily. the first responders will do is ogo on the trains and check out the damage and see if there is somebody still left on the train which at this point in time we highly doubt. their second train of action would be to go and try to begin the investigation as to how this happened. if you look at these trains. jonathan is exactly right. it looks like the train that came off the tracks actually went and collided in middle of the one of the trains right there. we have seen some pictures from inside that car right

just tuning in, is that two commuter trains that service the northern suburbs of connecticut outside of new york city collided. one was actually on its way to grand central station in new york. the other was going farther west into connecticut. and outside this train depot they managed to collide, fortunately though, not as we are told, full speed. we don't know what that means though. how fast they were actually going but certainly not up to 90 miles per hour. that is a blessing in all of this. 20 to 2 a people injured. nonlife threatening. they have triage set up in the area. if we go back to the pictures now we he can see that happening. if you look at the screen in the center there you see they are working on someone. we have been reassured by the fairfield connecticut, police department, and by s are nonliferth line that threatening. so that is a good thing but clearly glances responding here, these pictures courtesy wnyw our fox affiliate here in new york.
